Faith and Globalization: a lecture by the Rt Hon. Tony Blair

Last Thursday, I attended Tony Blair's lecture on Faith and Globalization at the YST Conservatory. Hop over to Carina's blog - she has recordings (Part 1 and Part 2) and a good review of the lecture.

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-03/26/xin_322030626213318754822.jpg

Blair's a favourite of mine - I love his eloquence and his self-deprecating humour. He never fails to make a joke about himself. He laughed at his technological ineptness at his last lecture in 2007 and about his academic shortcomings this time.

I agree with Carina though: his talk was far from meaty. He spent a long time (as he did in 2007) explaining the basics. His actual thoughts and ideas occupied a smaller portion of the speech than I would have hoped for.

I was also a bit uncomfortable with what he had to say. Carina touches on this too. But it was when I chat with Fr Marin that I realised what it was.

Blair has a goal here: faith aiding and humanizing the process of globalization.

The problem is: that's not the purpose of religion. The purpose of religion is to worship God. Everything else stems from that: our love for our neighbour, our involvement in politics, etc.

When we have a design for religion, when we want to use religion to attain a particular goal, we expect religion to change to fit our designs.
I noticed that in Blair's talk. He seemed to have his doubts about organized religion. He said organized religions had to evolve. He seemed to imply that he preferred spirituality to organized religion. This is at odds with the fact that he converted from the Church of England to the more doctrinally firm Roman Catholic Church just last year.

This also makes him focus on the cultural, ideational and sociological aspects of religion. I'm guessing (based on his wife's comments) that he doesn't consider the doctrinal and moral issues as pertinent to the discussion on faith and politics.

This is why the question Carina wanted to ask him would have been interesting: "what if a government tries to meddle and force faith-based organizations to commit actions that go against what their faith teaches, such as the distribution of condoms, or the removal of conscience-clauses for abortion? Many faith-based organizations have or have threatened to close down when forced to do such repugnant acts by the state. What is his stand on this issue then?"

Nevertheless, I'm glad I got to hear Mr Blair speak again. His ideas on Islam and the Middle East were insightful. I was especially interested in his belief that free speech was not unlimited and that hate-speech should not be tolerated.
And I too believe a greater understanding of faith is vital when dealing with politics and culture; and that the promotion of interfaith cooperation can heal many wounds. I believe that religion has in the past, and can continue to strengthen democracy and uphold the rights and dignity of all men. It does this, though, by "being Church" certainly within civil society, but not by being moulded into an NGO a charity organization or a political party.

Acies

Totus tuus ego sum, et omnia mea tua sunt.

The Tertiary Curia had its Acies today and we once again revewed our promise to our Queen. That's always a blessed occassion.

Had a nice lunch afterwards with Paul Chen, Paul Wong, Ferdi, Therese, Moli and Joanne and Aloysius from OLR. What with cheery Moli and the two Pauls, there was a lot of laughter! 'Twas a very heartwarming time.

I am all yours my Queen and my Mother and all that I have is yours.

Relaxing...

I'm finding it odd not having to think about my thesis all the time. Something feels missing.

Attended Acies, kept (slept through) Earth Hour.

(Earth Hour being commemorated in my room)

Will double check my thesis tomorrow in case I catch more typos to get corrected on Monday.

Longing for something?

From Fr Joe:

“LONGING FOR SOMETHING? MAYBE IT’S GOD!” When a friend of mine first saw the title of this initiative on a bus billboard, she humorously said, “Hum, longing for something? Maybe it’s… CHOCOLATE!” She did not mean to be profane; I guess she was just hungry. Her response does offer us something important to reflect upon. Many people are searching for ultimate meaning, but often they settle for something proximate and which gives a quick fix. Some turn to drugs and replace otherworldly communication (prayer) and meditation with drug induced euphoria. Others have substituted sexual union, and the accompanying thrills, for a genuine communion with God and the spiritual rapture that knows no bounds. I suppose some try to find God in a bottle, and yet excessive alcohol always fails to deliver what it promises and forces a heavy toll upon us as well. Even physical food, which we need to survive, cannot come close to the promise of the Eucharist as our spiritual food and encounter with the living God. Every one of us is like a puzzle where our lives consist of putting the pieces together in the right places. Without God, an important piece remains missing and the perfection or wholeness is ruined. We were made for God. There is no need to wander aimlessly through this world. The Church safeguards the answers to the ultimate questions; Christ, himself, is the source of this meaning. He is the Way and the Truth and the Life. The old children’s catechism did not hesitate to share the answer to the great existential question. Why did God make you and me? He made us TO KNOW HIM and TO LOVE HIM and TO SERVE HIM in this world and TO BE HAPPY AND GIVE HIM GLORY forever in the world to come. That is the long and short of it.

Depraved

BRUSSELS, march 24, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A proposed new directive from the European Commission (EC) will drastically restrict the use of animals in laboratory testing, and certain toxicology tests on animals will be permitted only after alternative methods, including research on tissue taken from human embryos, has proved fruitless, reports the Catholic Herald.

In its coverage of the issue, the Herald quotes a report accompanying the EC directive that says, "The establishment of human embryonic stem cells in 1998 raised hopes in many research areas, including the development of alternatives to animal experiments." The report says that human embryonic research is a "powerful alternative to animal tests."

The Fatal Four

CMR
Here we go! This is what you have been waiting for, we have your final and Fatal Four.

Barack Obama, the most pro-abortion president ever, the man who suggested that preventing infanticide was an undue burden, the man who made reversing Mexico City and ESCR policies top priorities was a clear favorite for the final four and he made it.

The American Civil Liberties Union is conducting a determined and long-term campaign to remove every trace of Christianity from America's government, schools, public property, and public discourse. They are clearly one of the most destructive forces in the culture.

Oprah Winfrey. Oprah runs a cult disguised as a television show. Oprah's brand of celebrity is particularly dangerous as she presents a very reasonable and charitable face to the world while championing everything but truth.

Voice Of The Faithful is out to destroy, as if it were possible, the Church. Using the defense of victims of abuse as their launching pad, they champion every kind of dissent possible while still claiming to be Catholic. For this they have earned thier top showing.

And now it's our turn to vote. So go cast your ballot here.

A funny comment I just read:
'Oprah sways the "common man" and the ACLU gets stupidity enshrined in law (as if lawyers needed any help enshrining stupidity).'

A bishop who is clear in teaching the truth

On Friday, March 21, Father John Jenkins, CSC, phoned to inform me that President Obama had accepted his invitation to speak to the graduating class at Notre Dame and receive an honorary degree. We spoke shortly before the announcement was made public at the White House press briefing. It was the first time that I had been informed that Notre Dame had issued this invitation.

President Obama has recently reaffirmed, and has now placed in public policy, his long-stated unwillingness to hold human life as sacred. While claiming to separate politics from science, he has in fact separated science from ethics and has brought the American government, for the first time in history, into supporting direct destruction of innocent human life.

This will be the 25th Notre Dame graduation during my time as bishop. After much prayer, I have decided not to attend the graduation. I wish no disrespect to our president, I pray for him and wish him well. I have always revered the Office of the Presidency. But a bishop must teach the Catholic faith “in season and out of season,” and he teaches not only by his words — but by his actions.

My decision is not an attack on anyone, but is in defense of the truth about human life.

- Bishop John M D'Arcy, Fort Wayne-South Bend.

Now this is some icy writing

Professor Ralph McInerny on the University of Notre Dame's plans to invite Obama to speak at its commencement and to confer on him an honorary degree:

RALPH McINERNY

Bernie Madoff has declined an honorary doctorate in economics from the University of Notre Dame, but all is not lost. Barack Hussein Obama, enabler in chief of abortion, has agreed to speak at the 2009 commencement and to receive an honorary doctorate of law. That abortion and its advocacy violate a primary precept of natural law reinforced by the Catholic Church’s explicit doctrine is a mere bagatelle. Wackos of all kinds will kick up a fuss, of course, but their protest will go unnoticed in South Bend. The pell-mell pursuit of warm and fuzzy Catholicism will continue. How better to defend the faith than to celebrate a man who advocates polishing off babies even after they are born? The newly created Herod Award [ROFL!] will be added to the university’s recognition of the chief magistrate. Administrators are hugging themselves with delight at this massive publicity coup. The national championship in football has eluded Notre Dame for many years, but when the president dribbles onto the stage at the great event, the hall will erupt in ecstatic applause; the president, Father Jenkins, will wring his hand; and a final nail will be driven into the coffin of a once-great Catholic university. No one will note nor long remember what Barack Obama says on the occasion. Who listens to commencement addresses? But the Lady atop the golden dome, recalling the flight into Egypt, will exhibit one of her many titles: She who weeps.

March To Madness - Execrable Eight

Some surprises from CMR. I thought Maher and Matthews would progress. But CMR has good reason below :)

We all saw some real action and excitement this weekend and from the carnage of civilization come the eight remaining contestants vying for the title of "Most Destructive Influence on the Culture"

Nacy Pelosi was the clear favorite over Octomom and did not disappoint. While Octomom clearly is no role model, her contribution to the ickification of our society pales in comparison to what the Speaker of the House does daily. Pelosi, as ranking partisan in the House of Representatives, continues to champion the spendapalooza, advocating abortion on demand and ESCR all while correcting the Pope on what the Church really teaches. For this, she has clearly earned her place in the Execrable Eight

Obama also easily triumphed over George Soros. While Soros is truly one of the more despicable characters with his determination to spend his considerable wealth on every liberal cause, it is dwarfed by Obama's willingness to do the same with your money, your grandchildren's money, and money that hasn't even been printed yet. No contest.

Christopher Hitchens takes down Chris Matthews by virtue of the fact that Hitchens singular purpose is too attack God and he sells a lot of books doing it. Matthews lost because not even God watches his show anymore.

As nasty a piece of work as is Bill Maher most people people actually recognize his pathos and his reach is limited by it. Oprah, on the other hand, spreads her gospel to millions who fail to see the truth. Because of this she is the clear winner in this contest.

Dan Brown takes down the ol' Ku Klux Kodger of the Senate. While they both lie with impunity, people actually believe Dan Brown. His particular brand of anti-Catholic anti-historical fiction give him the edge here.

In this hard fought contest the ACLU edged out Hillary. Hillary has been reduced to a mere minion of the One, while the ACLU still is actively destroying our civil liberties while claiming to defend them.

While Baldwin's loony liberalism and bad parenting skills certainly do not endear him, Arlen Specter's negative influence is far greater. As the great enabler of the Democrat juggernaut in Congress, this turncoat republican deserves his spot in the Execrable Eight.

The fight between Ron Howard and Vox Nova went into seven overtimes but in a stunning upset Vox Nova pulled it out in the last minute with a startling play in which they claim that gay civil marriage is ok as long as we (the Church) don't sanction it. That is a buzzer beater.

Tough choice in the battle between VOTF and the view. One group is composed of a bunch of secular loud mouth biddies that deride anything holy, mock the Pope, and are nauseatingly shallow and the other is the girls of the View. But at least the view is not pretending to be something it is not, Catholic. The win goes to the VOTF.

So there you have it. Who are your final four?

You don't need him!

Haha typical Colbert silliness/comedic brilliance :)

Harvard Researcher agrees with Pope on condoms in Africa

.- Pope Benedict’s recent brief remark against condoms has caused an uproar in the press, but several prominent scientists dedicated to preventing AIDS are defending the Pope, saying he was correct in his analysis. In an interview with CNA, Dr. Edward Green explained that although condoms should work, in theory, they may be “exacerbating the problem” in Africa.

Benedict XVI’s Tuesday comments on condoms were made as part of his explanation of the Church’s two prong approach to fighting AIDS. At one point in his response the Pontiff stressed that AIDS cannot be overcome by advertising slogans and distributing condoms and argued that they “worsen the problem.” The media responded with an avalanche of over 4,000 articles on the subject, calling Benedict a “threat to public health,” and saying that the Catholic Church should “enter the 21st century.”

Senior Harvard Research Scientist for AIDS Prevention, Dr. Edward Green, who is the author of five books, including “Rethinking AIDS Prevention: Learning from Successes in Developing Countries” discussed his support for Pope Benedict XVI’s comments with CNA.

According to Dr. Green, science is finding that the media is actually on the wrong side of the issue. In fact, Green says that not only do condoms not work, but that they may be “exacerbating the problem” in Africa.

“Theoretically, condoms ought to work,” he explained to CNA, “and theoretically, some condom use ought to be better than no condom use, but that’s theoretically.”

Condom proponents often cite the lack of condom education as the main culprit for higher AIDS rates in Africa but Green disagrees.

After spending 25 years promoting condoms for family planning purposes in Africa, he insists that he’s quite familiar with condom promotion. Yet, he claims that “anyone who worked in family planning knew that if you needed to prevent a pregnancy, say the woman will die, you don’t recommend a condom.”

Green recalls that when the AIDS epidemic hit Africa, the “Industry” began using AIDS as a “dual purpose” marketing strategy to get more funding for condom distribution. This, he claims, effectively took “something that was a 2nd or 3rd grade device for avoiding unwanted pregnancies” and turned it into the “best weapon we [had] against AIDS.”

The accepted wisdom in the scientific community, explained Green, is that condoms lower the HIV infection rate, but after numerous studies, researchers have found the opposite to be true. “We just cannot find an association between more condom use and lower HIV reduction rates” in Africa.

Dr. Green found that part of the elusive reason is a phenomenon known as risk compensation or behavioral disinhibition.

“[Risk compensation] is the idea that if somebody is using a certain technology to reduce risk, a phenomenon actually occurs where people are willing to take on greater risk.” The idea can be related to someone that puts on sun block and is willing to stay out in the sun longer because they have added protection. In this case, however, the greater risk is sexual. Because people are willing take on more risk, they may “disproportionally erase” the benefits of condom use, Green said.

Another factor that contributes to ineffective condom use in Africa, is the phenomenon where condoms may be effective on an “individual level,” but not on a “population level.” Green’s research found that “condoms have been effective” in HIV concentrated areas where high risk activities are already being conducted, such as brothels in countries like Thailand.

Claiming to be a liberal himself, Green asserts that promoting Western “liberal ideology” where, “most Africans are conservative when it comes to sexual behavior,” is quite offensive to them. Citing his new book, “Indigenous Theories and Contagious Disease,” Green described Africans as “very religious by global standards” who are offended by “trucks going around where people are dancing to ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’, tossing out condoms to teenagers and the children of the village.”

Green also noted that there is an ideology called “harm reduction” that is being pushed by many organizations trying to prevent AIDS. The ideology believes that “you can’t change the underlying behavior, that you can’t get people to be faithful, especially Africans,” the HIV specialist explained.

One country, Uganda, recognized these issues and said, “Listen, if you have multiple sex partners, you are going to get AIDS.” What worked in Uganda, a country that has seen a decline by as much as 2/3 in AIDS infections, was that officials realized that even aside from religious and cultural reasons, “no one likes condoms.” Instead of waiting for “American and European advisors to arrive,” Ugandan officials reacted and developed a program that fit their culture; their main message being “stick to one partner or love faithfully.”

However, in 2004, Uganda’s AIDS infection rates began to increase once again, due to an influx of condoms and Western “advice”, Green recalled. Western donors also came to Uganda and said behavioral change doesn’t work and that, “most infections nowadays are among married people.” Green said these claims are “misleading,” pointing out that “married people always have lower HIV infection rates than single or divorced people of the same age group.”

Green’s new book, “AIDS and Ideology,” to be completed in the next few months, will describe the industry in Africa that is “drawing billions of dollars a year promoting condoms, testing, drugs, and treatment of AIDS” and is clearly resistant to the idea that behavioral change is the solution.

Yet the two countries that have the highest infection rate of AIDS in the world, Botswana and Swaziland, have recently launched campaigns to promote fidelity and monogamy, the Harvard researcher said. These countries “have learned the hard way” about the failure of condoms in preventing AIDS, he said, noting that “Botswana has probably had more condom promotion” than any other county on a per capita basis. Green said he had no problem “having condoms as a backup to fidelity-based programs.”

According to Green, the Catholic Church should continue to “do what it is already doing,” avoid “arguing about the diameter of viruses” and cite scientific evidence in connection with scripture and moral theology.

"Rejoice, O Jerusalem"

It's Laetare Sunday today. And the priests at St Joseph's BT were in rose coloured vestments. The altar servers were dressed in rose and the Tabernacle veil was rose. It good to go to a parish that takes the trouble to be liturgically elegant. :)

Fr Alex Chua's homily was wonderful. It was on suffering, and how Our Lord's followers must have a "vulnerable" love - love that demands no rights, no reward, a love that epitomizes the Beatitudes. That's certainly something to work at.

A Quick Catholic Case Against Condoms

Via Patrick Madrid

Conventional wisdom is wrong as usual

From Peter Hitchens:

Conventional wisdom says the Pope is stupid and wrong to say fidelity and abstinence are better than condoms at guarding Africans from AIDS.

Conventional wisdom, as usual, is talking out of its backside. What the Pope says matters only if anyone listens to him. If nobody does, his opposition to condoms won’t stop anyone using them and will make no difference. If lots of people listen to him, his support for marital fidelity will persuade many people to follow this path, and so save untold lives.

The experience of such countries as Uganda suggests very strongly that he is right when he says this, and that fidelity is a far better protection than a rubber sheath. The only real hope is a change in sexual habits.

I am not a Roman Catholic, but I am weary of the concerted smearing and misrepresentation which the Pontiff constantly faces.

I still have to strengthen some parts though.

And of course, slash and burn...

I've gone through it once already and I've cut 1599 words today. 2743 more. But I'll be writing some more too - conclusion and "signposts" here and there as to indicate where my thesis is heading. So I need to cut down a lot more.

I put my word-count in a excel sheet and, because I like drawing graphs, I plot my progress...Haha.

Historical data was obtained by the "Thesis: Progress Reports"on this blog. Haha.

The orange line is the word count including footnotes, the blue excluding and the red is my word limit of 10,000.

It is our duty to offer everyone this possibility of attaining eternal life.

At this moment I would like to go back in thought five centuries, to the years following 1506, when, in these lands, then visited by the Portuguese, the first sub-Saharan Christian kingdom was established, thanks to the faith and determination of the king, Dom Alphonsus I Mbemba-a-Nzinga, who reigned from 1506 until his death in 1543.

The kingdom remained officially Catholic from the sixteenth century until the eighteenth, with its own ambassador in Rome. You see how two quite different ethnic groups – the Bantu and the Portuguese – were able to find in the Christian religion common ground for understanding, and committed themselves to ensuring that this understanding would be long-lasting, and that differences – which undoubtedly existed, and great ones at that – would not divide the two kingdoms! For Baptism enables all believers to be one in Christ.

Today it is up to you, brothers and sisters, following in the footsteps of those heroic and holy heralds of God, to offer the Risen Christ to your fellow citizens. So many of them are living in fear of spirits, of malign and threatening powers. In their bewilderment they end up even condemning street children and the elderly as alleged sorcerers.

Who can go to them to proclaim that Christ has triumphed over death and all those occult powers (cf. Eph 1:19-23; 6:10-12)? Someone may object: “Why not leave them in peace? They have their truth, and we have ours. Let us all try to live in peace, leaving everyone as they are, so they can best be themselves.” But if we are convinced and have come to experience that without Christ life lacks something, that something real – indeed, the most real thing of all – is missing, we must also be convinced that we do no injustice to anyone if we present Christ to them and thus grant them the opportunity of finding their truest and most authentic selves, the joy of finding life. Indeed, we must do this. It is our duty to offer everyone this possibility of attaining eternal life.

Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed

When a knight won his spurs, in the stories of old,
He was gentle and brave, he was gallant and bold;
With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand,
For God and for valour he rode through the land.

No charger have I, and no sword by my side,
Yet still to adventure and battle I ride,
Though back into storyland giants have fled,
And the knights are no more and the dragons are dead.

Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed
'Gainst the dragons of anger, the ogres of greed;
And let me set free with the sword of my youth,
From the castle of darkness, the power of the truth.

Bishop Finn – Take the Family to Confession this Lent

Via Fr Z

Following is Kansas City – St. Joseph Bishop Robert W. Finn’s column from the upcoming print edition of The Catholic Key:

Lent is an Important Time for Sacramental Confession

By Most Rev. Robert W. Finn

On Saturdays whenever I am in town, I try to be available at the Cathedral so that I can fulfill one of my greatest privileges as a priest – to hear the confessions of the faithful, and offer sacramental absolution

Hearing Confessions in the sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the most wonderful priestly acts – to represent Jesus in mercy. It is also a very significant responsibility to act as judge and as counselor in the work of reconciling sinners to God and the Church.

This sacrament was given to the Church by Jesus Christ as the normal means for us to receive the forgiveness of our sins, particularly our serious sins. At the same time, it is a powerful way to grow in virtue and holiness.

Pope Pius XII in Mystici Corporis (#88) urged frequent confession of venial sins “to ensure more rapid progress day by day in the path of virtue.”

According to the Pope, some of its benefits are these: Genuine self-knowledge is increased; Humility grows; Bad habits are corrected; Spiritual neglect and tepidity are resisted; The conscience is purified; The will strengthened; A helpful self-control is attained; and Grace is increased in virtue of the Sacrament itself.

I have found personally that frequent confession – I try to go every week – helps me to try harder to be a better and more holy bishop.

Almost every Pope since the 1950’s has said that the great “sin of our century” is the lack of the sense of sin. It is true, I fear, that unless we reflect honestly and with humility every day on God’s commandments, we can quickly become numb to so many of the wrongs that flourish in our culture. We may not even realize how far away from God we have grown.

The most important ingredient of Confession, on the part of the penitent, is contrition or sorrow for our sins. We must begin to realize, with the help of the Holy Spirit, and perhaps the caring direction of another person, how we have hurt others; how we have damaged the integrity of our life through the decisions and choices we make; how we have compromised the great dignity and love to which we are called by Jesus.

Our Lord, because He knows and loves the human heart, also knew this Sacrament of Penance or Reconciliation would be necessary for us in our path to heaven. Lent, because it is a kind of community retreat for the Church, provides a particularly helpful moment of grace. Many of our parishes have Lenten Penance services, or missions, or additional times of prayer and reflection that provide a help to us to examine our conscience. The presence of additional priests may make it easier for us to take this important step back to the life of the Church, even if we have not visited the Sacrament for many years.

I have asked our priests a number of times to help me make the renewal of this Sacrament of Reconciliation a pastoral priority in our Diocese. I am grateful that so many of them spend long hours in the confessional and greet those who come with gentleness. They are blessed instruments of Christ’s peace. Make good use of this wonderful gift, during Lent and frequently throughout the year. Consider going to church for confession as spouses or as a family. In this way you can strengthen each other in your resolve to be more faithful.

O Mary Conceived without sin; Mary ever-sinless virgin; Mary Mother of Mercy: Pray for us sinners!

  • Getting set up for a breakfast meeting. The Big O needs to tell a joke midway through coffee service, and wants to get the punchline right 49 minutes ago
  • Leno really makes you rehearse for his show. His team prepped The Man's team. And he still couldn't come up with a good joke. about 11 hours

Thanks Carina for this hilarious site!

And here's a threat from said telepromter:

Anti-Catholic Catholics attacking the Pope

I saw this drivel two days ago. Here's Fr Z's take on it:

Newsweek posted an op-ed of anti-Catholic religious bigotry on the Guest Spot of "On Faith" written by Robert S. McElvaine, a professor at Millsaps College, associated with the United Methodist Church.

Arter reading this, ou will probably agree that this man’s pastor should deny him Holy Communion until he issued a public statement of apology.

My emphases and comments.

Impeach the Pope

By Robert S. McElvaine
Professor of Arts & Letters, Millsaps College

Enough! No—Too much!

Amid all the justified outrage we all feel at Bernie Madoff and the AIG bandits, let us save some intense outrage for Pope Benedict XVI. [If the writer thinks there is any moral equivalent here, it would be legitimate to ask how he got a doctorate.]

After insulting Muslims by declaring in 2006 that Muhammad had brought "things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached," [Pope Benedict didn’t declare this. It was a quote of someone else in his Regensburg Address.] after reiterating (through the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) in 2008 that the subject of the ordination of women is not even open for discussion and declaring that anyone involved with the ordination of women will be automatically excommunicated, [So the Catholic Church doesn’t get to say what the Catholic Church believes?] after lifting in January of this year the excommunication of Holocaust-denier Richard Williamson, [Irresponsibly obtuse: that is not why the excommunication was liften. And this is a professor writing this. Tisk.] now Benedict XVI opens a visit to Africa by telling the people of a continent decimated by AIDS that the distribution of condoms "increases the problem" of the spread of AIDS. [But… it does.]

I am a Catholic [?!] and the idea that such a man is God’s spokesperson on earth is absurd to me. [This is a Catholic… talking in this manner… in public… in print… about the Pope.]

There are, of course, no provisions in the hierarchical institution set up, not by Jesus but by men who hijacked his name and in many cases perverted his teachings, for impeaching a pope and removing him from office. But there ought to be. [insert your chosen invective here]

As I detail in my latest book, [Ahhhhh! NOW we get to what this is a about. It isn’t about Pope Benedict at all. This is all about talking about himself and his book! I am reminded of the false outrage some congressmen display during hearing when they know the cameras are on.] "Grand Theft Jesus: The Hijacking of Religion in America" (Crown), the cardinal sin of the Catholic Church—a literally deadly sin, if ever there was one—is its opposition to birth control. [So, he as called the Church sinful. And he dissents from Catholic teaching on birth control.] Far from being, as the Church contends, part of its moral doctrine, this policy [Policies can be changed right? That is why he weasles his way into this language.] is, plainly, the immoral doctrine of the Church. The use of condoms is a pro-life position. [uh huh]

Why does the Church persist in such a manifestly immoral doctrine? [Now he is starting to sound like a kook.] One suspects that it must be the usual twisted thinking about sex and women. The Church’s opposition to birth control is largely an outgrowth of its all-male composition and those males’ attempts to degrade women’s physical powers [not just kooky, but maybe not very up to date on what the Church has been teaching for decades] by asserting that women and the intercourse into which they supposedly tempt men are necessary evils ("It is well for a man not to touch a woman," Paul instructed the Christians of Corinth), the only purpose of which is procreation.

Misogyny may not be "the Church’s one foundation," but it is a major part of the base on which it was constructed. [Not just kooky, but a also little thick.]

It should be obvious that the sin in an over-populated world [HUH? He is also a zero-sum disciple of Erlich too? I wonder if he is a Malthusian or, perhaps, in favor of eugenics.] is not attempting to control birth, but attempting to control birth control.

And now for the pope to go so far as to indicate that condom use worsens the spread of AIDS [Umm… it does.]—there’s an outrage that tops Madoff and AIG!

Let’s start a movement within the Catholic Church to impeach Pope Benedict XVI and remove him from office. While we’re at it, let’s replace him with a woman. [Thus confirming the thick element mentioned above.]

He reversed the excommunication of a Holocaust denier. Will he excommunicate me for pointing out that he is a misogyny denier? [No… worse! He won’t buy your stupid book, which is really what this is a about, isn’t it.]

If this be heresy, make the most of it.

Robert S. McElvaine is Elizabeth Chisholm Professor of Arts & Letters at Millsaps College. His latest book is Grand Theft Jesus: The Hijacking of Religion in America (Crown).

Guys like this are really just flapping their arms around so that you will notice them and maybe.. just maybe… a few people out there will buy their books.

There is no real need to get overly excited about this fellow. This is simply a useful exercise in what we are going to be seeing a great deal more of in the next couple years.

Satan has the crowbar in right now and he’s prying hard.

Progressivists, most of whom don’t a clue what they are talking about but excel at puffing up in indignation about things they label "not fair", will in the manner of Lenin’s useful idiots broaden more and more the scope of the last acceptable social prejudice.

They will make the true anti-Catholic movement which is coming down the road a lot more acceptable to a lot more people.

Obama mocks Special Olympics

Bush was, at worst, bumbling. Obama's turning out to be mean and hurtful:

So at what point is a guy just a...not a nice guy. Obama mocked Jessica Simpson for weight issues. His campaign mocked disabled veteran John McCain for not being able to type. He compared Sarah Palin to a pig. Just yesterday he compared AIG to suicide bombers. And now, get this one from ABC:

The first appearance by a sitting president on "The Tonight Show" may well end up being the last.

President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.

Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he's gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically.

It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president said.

When asked about the remark, the White House said the president did not intend to offend.

"The president made an off-hand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics," White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton said. "He thinks the Special Olympics is a wonderful program that gives an opportunity for people with disabilities from around the world."

Thesis: progress report #7

I just sent in my draft to Prof Kate. Thank God!

Parts of it need quite a bit of reworking, I'm sure. I just pray there's no major revisions required.
The word count is not 14, 342.
Now I didn't cut down 3,500 words. I realised that the 17,000-odd that I reported last time included footnotes. Haha.

Two presentations tomorrow!

I leave you with some key players of the Church's work against authoritarianism in Poland and Spain:

St. Joseph, Husband of the Virgin Mary and Foster Father of Jesus

Memorare To Saint Joseph

Remember, O most pure spouse of Mary, and my dearly beloved guardian, St. Joseph, that never was it known that anyone who invoked your care and requested your help was left without consolation.

Inspired with this confidence, I come to you, and with all the ardor of my spirit I commend myself to you. Do not reject my prayer, O Foster Father of the Savior, but graciously receive and answer it. Amen!

Preface of St Joseph

Father, all-powerful and ever-living God,
we do well always and everywhere to give You thanks and praise
as we honour Saint Joseph.

He is that just man,
that wise and loyal servant,
whom You placed at the head of Your family.
With a husband's love He cherished Mary,
the virgin Mother of God.
With fatherly care He watched over Jesus Christ, Your Son,
conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Through Christ the choirs of angels and all the powers of heaven
praise and worship your glory.
May our voices blend with theirs as we join in their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

From St Josemaria Escriva:

Love Saint Joseph a lot. Love him with all your soul, because he, together with Jesus, is the person who has most loved our Blessed Lady and been closest to God. He is the person who has most loved God, after our Mother. He deserves your affection, and it will do you good to get to know him, because he is the Master of the interior life, and has great power before the Lord and before the Mother of God. (The Forge, 554)

In human life, Joseph was Jesus’ master in their daily contact, full of refined affection, glad to deny himself to take better care of Jesus. Isn’t that reason enough for us to consider this just man, this holy patriarch, in whom the faith of the old covenant bears fruit, as a master of interior life? Interior life is nothing but continual and direct conversation with Christ, so as to become one with him. And Joseph can tell us many things about Jesus. Therefore, never neglect devotion to him — Ite ad Ioseph: “Go to Joseph” — as christian tradition puts it in the words of the Old Testament.

A master of interior life, a worker deeply involved in his job, God’s servant in continual contact with Jesus: that is Joseph. Ite ad Ioseph. With St Joseph, the Christian learns what it means to belong to God and fully to assume one’s place among men, sanctifying the world. Get to know Joseph and you will find Jesus. Talk to Joseph and you will find Mary, who always sheds peace about her in that attractive workshop in Nazareth. (Christ is passing by, 56)

The whole Church recognizes St Joseph as a patron and guardian. For centuries many different features of his life have caught the attention of believers. He was a man ever faithful to the mission God gave him. That is why, for many years now, I have liked to address him affectionately as “our father and lord.”

St Joseph really is a father and lord. He protects those who revere him and accompanies them on their journey through this life — just as he protected and accompanied Jesus when he was growing up. (Christ is passing by, 39)

Dear St Joseph, patron of the Universal Church, intercede and guard for Christ's Church on earth today, beset as She is from enemies all around Her. Pray for and inspire Pope Benedict, who's patron you also are.
Guide all fathers today; and all workers.
And pray that I may be, like you, a just man.
Amen!

An open mind?

Merely having an open mind is nothing. The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid.

Did Bat Hitch a Ride to Space?

The bat, seen clinging to the external fuel tank of the Space Shuttle Discovery before its launch on Sunday, apparently clung for dear life to the side of the tank as the spaceship lifted off.

(NASA)

And what a ride.

The shuttle accelerates to an orbital velocity of 17,500 milers per hour, which is 25 times faster than the speed of sound, in just over eight minutes. That's zero to 100 mph in 10 seconds.

Did it make it into space? No one knows yet. But photos of Discovery as it cleared the launch tower showed a tiny speck on the side of the tank. When those photos were blown up, it became apparent that the speck was a bat.

Flight director Paul Dye said no one has seen the bat since.

"I heard that it was clinging to the tank at liftoff, but I don't think anyone has seen it since," he said.

Update:

The pictures were taken by Nasa staff as the poor thing hung on while the countdown reached zero, the main engine roared into life, and space shuttle Discovery lifted-off into orbit. Apart from shuffling around a bit, the fair tail bat stayed put. At least for a while.

Nasa launch controllers used an infra-red camera to confirm the bat was still alive and hadn't frozen onto the shuttle's insulation before take-off. A wildlife expert concluded the creature had a number of injuries, including a damaged wing. It is thought to have perished shortly after the main engine ignited.
Launch Director Mike Leinbach said:

We're characterising him as unexpected debris and he's probably still unexpected debris somewhere.

Nasa's Final Inspection Team, known as ICE, assessed whether the creature posed a risk to the shuttle's heat shield, but decided it was safe to fly with the extra passenger. A Nasa memo said: "The bat eventually became Interim Problem Report 119V-0080 after the ICE team finished their walkdown," adding "Ultimately a Launch Commit Criteria waiver to ICE-01 was written to accept the stowaway."

March to Madness - Round of 16

CMR
Things are really starting to take shape in the contest to find the person who exerting the worst influence on our culture. Some of the bubble players and teams have fallen by the wayside as the people with a proven track record show why they are the favorites. Here are your Creep Sixteen.

Some big surprises advanced to the Creep 16 in the only tournament that really matters.

Pelosi over OctoMom – The eyes have it. Pelosi looked surprised that she won and flew out on an Air Force Jet. Hey, in the end no matter how messed up she might be OctoMom gave life while Pelosi seems hell bent on destroying human life.

Obama over Soros – Obama wasn’t gonna’ by punished by a billionaire.

Hitchens over Kmiec – Intelligently designed game plan just evolved naturally, said Hitchens.

Chris Matthews over Joe Biden – Biden just had a little too much pride to get down and dirty enough to compete with Matthews, who went after loose balls without dignity.

Bill Maher over Bill Maher – Bill Maher won because he simply had more Playboy Playmate 1990 retreads as cheerleaders and the other Bill Maher got distracted.

Oprah over Al Sharpton – Al thinks "its a outrage" that he lost. But pound for pound Oprah is simply capable of more damage. Al's bullhorn just wasn't big enough.

Robert Byrd over Janet Jackson – Did you really think the former Klan member would let "one of her kind" win?

Dan Brown over Barney Frank – Frank just spreads lies about Republicans while Dan Brown lies about Jesus. He wins.

ACLU over Jar Jar Binks – Jar Jar was content to screw up a galaxy far far away. The ACLU is screwing up this one.

Hillary Clinton over Peter Singer – Peter Singer came up with great theories on how to advance evil in Western Civilization but Hillary puts them into practice. Every day.

Arlen Specter over Spears - It came down to one last play. Spears who reinvented herself and made yet another comeback was on defense. Specter had the ball. It was just a question of whether he's go left or right. Spears guessed right but Specter did the non primary year shuffle and only faked right and drove left. Sadly, if this were an election year Spears likely would've been right.

Alec Baldwin over Bill O’Reilly – Both loudmouth blowhards but CMR gets the feeling that Baldwin really believes it.

Ron Howard over Michael Steele – Howard gets the victory just for gumption because he’s attacking a 2,000 year old institution while Steele is simply presiding over the destruction of the Republican Party which has only been around for 150 years.

Vox Nova over Clooney – Hey, at least some people care what Vox Nova says.

VOTF over Donald Trump – In a choice between morally bankrupt and financially bankrupt, morals win out here.

The View over Markos Moloutsis – The View recruits new fresh faces with their lunacy. Kos simply preaches to the converted.

Hail, Queen of Heaven

A favourite Marian hymn:

Hail, Queen Of Heaven -

http://puffin.creighton.edu/jesuit/andre/images/ave_maris_stella.jpg

Hail, Queen of heav'n, the ocean star,
Guide of the wand'rer here below;
Thrown on life's surge, we claim thy care:
Save us from peril and from woe.

Mother of Christ, O Star of the sea,
Pray for the wanderer, pray for me.

O gentle, chaste, and spotless Maid,
We sinners make our prayers through thee;
Remind thy Son that He has paid
The price of our iniquity.

Virgin most pure, O star of the sea,
Pray for the sinner, pray for me.

And while to Him Who reigns above
In Godhead one, in Persons three,
The Source of life, of grace, of love,
Homage we pay on bended knee:

Do thou, bright Queen, O star of the sea,
Pray for thy children, pray for me.
